MODEL BEHATI PRINSLOO RETURNS TO HER HOME
COUNTRY ON A MISSION TO HELP PROTECT RHINOS
WHERE TO GO “Namibia is such an extraordi-
nary country, you really can’t go wrong. The
Namib desert is like a sea of red sand—it runs
for hundreds of miles and tumbles into the
Atlantic Ocean. Sossusvlei (1), in the southern
part of the desert, is famous both for the Big
Daddy dune, one of the tallest in the world, and
for Deadvlei, a dried-out white-clay marsh
dotted with petrified trees. Swakopmund (2)
is fantastic for both foodies and adventure
seekers. It’s where I used to go sandboarding.
But my most recent trip back was focused on
rhino conservation, so we went to the areas
we were most likely to see them. We visited
Etosha National Park (3) and conservancies
in northwest Namibia.”
WHERE TO STAY “We started our trip at Mount
Etjo Safari Lodge [mount-etjo.com]—its founders
have nurtured several orphaned rhinos. From
there we headed to the Desert Rhino Camp
(4), where trackers patrol and protect one of
Africa’s largest wild populations of black rhinos,
and to Damaraland Camp (5). Both are run by

ted to conservation and sustainability. The
area is so beautiful, with its rugged red rocks,
flat-topped mountains, and stunning light.”
WHAT TO DO “Namibia is a huge country,
so short day trips aren’t really possible. We
spent our days tracking rhinos, bouncing around
in Land Rovers, and relaxing at water holes.
We got to see rhinos in the wild and meet the
people caring for orphaned animals. When I
was a child, my parents and I loved to drive to
remote places and camp, but this trip wouldn’t
have been possible without being able to cover
large distances quickly. If you have lots of time,
driving across the country is wonderful—but if
you don’t, Namibia has a great aviation industry,
and flying is a pleasure.”

WHAT TO PACK Rugged boots, utilitarian layering
pieces, and a good hat are all you need.
