ordy! We’re already on our third Badass
Women issue, and, frankly, I’m beside
myself. To literally be beside the singular
Diane Keaton (below) is a dream
achieved. At InStyle we celebrate
women who are profoundly themselves, and nobody
is more herself than the legendary Diane. She
brought her own hats to our shoot, and if I may run
with the metaphor, she wears all of them.
Who else wears many hats? The incredible Janelle
Monáe, this issue’s cover star. Janelle has been a
badass since birth, forging a distinctive visual identity
and a playful, gutsy spirit. There was no one better to
wear our brand-new Badass T-shirt (left), designed by
superstylist Karla Welch. I mean, nothing says “badass”
like an ’80s hot-pink logo, am I right? Go grab yours!
And because we love women who make change—
and we love making things—I’m so happy to feature
Jameela Jamil in this issue, wearing custom Saskia
Diez Badass barrettes (bottom left). This lady is a
force. She’s lived through so much—illness, an eating
disorder, body shaming—and come out the other side
absolutely resolute about cultivating what she calls
body neutrality: not caring about how our bodies
look but rather saving our energy for other things
like, say ... life. I’m honored to call Jameela a friend,
and on behalf of InStyle, I want to thank her for
being one of the most important, fearless,
and necessary new voices in the culture.
I hope you enjoy this issue as much as
my brilliant team and I did when we put it
together. It fills my heart. Onward.
