the Roman Revolution

ThebiographyofAtticusbyCorneliusNepos,coveringthelasteightdecades
oftheRepublicandwrittenattheprecisemomentoftheestablishmentof
monarchybyOctavian,oughtalwaystohavebeentreatedbothasoneofthe
bestintroductionstotheperiod,andasanexposition,fromauniqueangle,
ofsomeofthevaluesexpressedinRomansociety.Butnow,morethanever,
theremaybeaplaceforabriefessaywhichattemptstobringoutbothsome
valuesexhibitedinthisparticulartextandthewayinwhichtheseweretaken
up,distorted,anddeployedinthepropagandaoftheAugustanregime.For,
firstly,thelargerbackgroundoflate-Republicanscholarship,antiquarianism,
historiography,andbiographyhasbeenfullyexploredbyElizabethRawson;^1
secondly,JosephGeigerhasarguedfortheoriginalityof Neposasawriter
ofpoliticalbiography;^2 thirdly,wehaveamajorstudyoftheethicalmodels
whichitisthepurposeofthebiographytoholdupforemulation.^3 Finally,
