The edict is quoted in a Latin papyrus of the first century..,itselfevi-
dently part of a report of legal proceedings. It begins ‘‘Imp. Caesar [d]ivi
filiustrium[v]irreipublicaeconsultor(?)’’—or‘‘consulter’’(consulforthe
thirdtime)or‘‘consuliter.’’(consulforthesecondtime)or‘‘constit(uendae)
iter(um)’’(toreorganizeforthesecondtime)—‘‘said,’’whichseemstosug-
gestadatebetweenand.Theextremelylegalistictermsofthedocument
arenoticeable,includingforinstanceaprovisionforveteranstobeenrolled
inacertaintribeforthecensusandforvotingpurposes.
Itwillbeconvenienttocompletethedossierwiththree‘‘post-Triumviral’’
documents.ItistobeemphasisedthatinallthreethetitulatureofOctavian
mentionsnopublicofficeotherthantheconsulate.
