directionofrepublicanism;ourevidenceprovidesonlyasingleuncertainin-

The notion that these two methods of appointment and two forms of
titulaturereflectedafundamentaldivisionofpoliticalandadministrativere-
sponsibility between Princeps and Senate is an illusion.^89 Nor can we tell
whatformaldescriptionwasappliedtoAugustus’positioninrelationtothe
imperialprovinces.Itmaybethathewasformallyproconsuloftheseprov-
inceswhileconcurrentlyholdingtheconsulship(Pompeyhadalreadybeen
