hadtobepublishedbyseparateauthors,ifwithinthesamevolume,bothin
theinitialpublicationandinthefinalreport.^18
.ThetwoGreekinscriptionsoftheIndiankingAsoka,ofthemidthird
century..ThesearesofartheonlytwoBuddhistdocumentssurvivingin
Greek. Both come from Kandahar.The first, published in , has a par-
allel Aramaic text and is an invitation to the king’s subjects to follow him
inabstainingfrommeat.^19 Thesecondwaspublishedin.^20 Inthiscase
thereisnoparalleltextintheepigraphicsense,buttheinscriptionisaGreek
versionoftheendof EdictXIIandthebeginningof EdictXIIIofAsoka,
alreadyknownfrominscriptionsofhisputupelsewhere.Thefirstcontains
moralprecepts,andthesecondgivesanaccountoftheking’sremorseand
conversionafterthecasualtiesanddestructionbroughtaboutinawarwhich
he fought in Kalinga. It does not seem that these truly remarkable docu-
mentshaveyethadtheirfullimpactonourconceptioneitheroftheuseof
theGreeklanguageincentralAsiaorofthenatureof ‘‘Hellenisation.’’^21
