INDIA

Raise a glass

ADVANCED

It’s a perennial problem: what gift do you give a man for
Christmas? For many, a high-end bottle will do the trick. As
The Economist reports, Stranger & Sons, a newcomer to the gin-
producing market, is banking on its “made in India” bona fides
to boost business by the end of the year.
After all, the gin and tonic originated in India during the colo-
nial era as a malaria cure. Many of the big brands made in Britain
even sound Indian, like the Bombay Sapphire, Jodhpur and Gin
Wala. A market-research firm says that Stranger & Sons’ sales
are in line with those of more famous gins, which are growing
by 20 per cent annually. This is part of a positive global trend:
sales of gin are increasing nearly three times as fast as those of
other premium spirits. The three young entrepreneurs behind
the brand can look to this and their increased production — up
from 1,800 bottles a month to 21,000 by the end of 2019 — as
good reasons to raise a glass.
