PAPER-FREE WORLD


The iPad has not only changed the way we
consume content but changed the environment.
Over the past decade, technology has allowed
us to embrace a ‘paper-free world,’ with
virtually every aspect of our lives being digitized
to improve efficiencies, save money, and
ultimately reduce the impact on the planet. We
no longer send our friends a letter or postcard;
we update them via iMessage or WhatsApp, and
we no longer print off our holiday snaps; we
share them in iCloud Galleries and put them on
Instagram for the world to see.


But perhaps one of the biggest impacts the
iPad and iPhone has had on the planet is in the
world of media; from our daily newspapers to
glossy magazines, consumers now prefer to
consume content on their devices, and that’s
caused shockwaves around the world. In the UK,
for example, between 2011 and 2019 more than
one billion pounds of revenue disappeared
from the newspaper industry as consumers
switched to social media for news, and
magazines have had billions of dollars wiped
off their valuations as major corporations
transition to digital advertising over print.


But it’s not all bad news. For organizations and
publishing houses that couldn’t innovate fast
enough, there have been challenges, but that
