National Geographic since
1954, fi rst as a writer and

chairman of the board. He was the fi fth
generation of his family to serve as National
Geographic president, and his great-

“Early-morning sounds carried clearly: chatter of townsfolk hurrying to the bakery for
hot bread, clink of wine bottles about to be fi lled with milk, beep of motor scooters,
rasp of a carpenter’s saw, waves lapping in the inner harbor, Le Barachois—and over
all the distant groan of Galantry’s horn.”
