General enrollment period

for Medicare Part B

Hillary Hatch
Public Affairs Specialist
If you did not apply for Medicare Part
B (medical insurance) within three months
before or after turning age 65, you have
another chance each year during the Gen-
eral Enrollment Period. The period runs
from Jan. 1 to March 31 every year.
If you don’t enroll in Part B when
you’re first eligible for it, you may have
to pay a late enrollment penalty for as
long as you have Part B coverage. Your
monthly premium will increase 10 per-
cent for each 12-month period that you

were eligible for Part B but did not sign
up for it. Your coverage starts the first day
of the month after you sign up.

Luella Rose (Knight) Hamblin went to be
with her Lord on February 24, 2023, at her
daughter’s home, 55 days short of her 101st
birthday.
She was born on April 20, 1922, in Lakev-
iew, MI, to Bertha May (Ragar) and Edson
Henry Knight, the seventh of nine children.
She lived in the Pierson area for much of her
childhood and then graduated from Grand-
ville High School in 1941. She did some
factory work during World War II and then
went on to college at Calvin and then Hun-
tington. It was at Huntington that she played
ladies’ basketball as a Green Hornet and
where she met her love, Howard Hamblin.
Luella taught grades K-8 for two years at
Bell School in Ottawa County before she left
teaching and married Howard in 1949. She
and Howard had three children: Bruce, Carol
and Stanley. Since Howard was a Pastor, she
became a Pastor’s wife while they served at
McCallum, Baltimore, and Lowell United
Brethren Churches. Luella was a faithful
stay-at-home mom, Pastor’s wife, and a Sun-
day School teacher for many years. Later,
she worked at Hastings Aluminum Products
for 13 years.
Luella started writing poems as a young
woman and continued throughout her life.
She wrote poems about her Pastor’s ser-
mons, about weather happenings, and about

the grandchildren. She loved to read, and she
crocheted. She crocheted over 200 hats for
newborns at Pennock Hospital. She got great
pleasure from filling her canning jars with
fruit and garden produce. She made apple
pies for all her nearby grandsons’ birthdays.
Howard passed away in 2001, but Luella
continued living in their home until 2019
when an injury made it necessary for her to
live with her daughter.
Luella was preceded in death by her hus-
band, Howard Hamblin; her sons, Bruce
Hamblin and Stanley Hamblin; her parents,
Edson and Bertha Knight; her half-brothers,
Leon and Leonard Palmer; her sister, La
Verna Albrecht, and her brothers, Leo
Knight, Loren Knight, Lawrence Knight,
Lyle Knight and Leslie Knight.
Luella is survived by her daughter and
son-in-law, Carol and Jim Dickinson of
Hastings; her daughter-in-law and son-in-
law, Vickie and Michael Lipsey of Lakeland,
FL; her grandchildren, Nathan and Amanda
Hamblin, Elizabeth and James Slager, Dan-
iel and Angie Dickinson, Kevin and Hannah
Lipsey, Matthew and Angelina Dickinson,
Janiece Lipsey, Angela and Kenny Lane, and
Stephen Dickinson; 15 great-grandchildren;
her beloved sister-in-law, Millie Knight; a
number of special church friends, and in
these past few months, her dear neighbor,
Judy Dickerson, and her favorite trombone
player, Mark Hurless.
Memorial contributions can be made to

donate/, P.O. Box 901, Grand Rapids, MI

ber for many years.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 5, 2023,
from 4 to 6 p.m., at Girrbach Funeral Home,

Funeral Service will be Monday, March 6,

Brethren Church, 13120 Bell Road (M-50),
Lake Odessa, MI 48849, with a visitation
one hour prior.
