You are West and have to lead against South’s
3NT, which partner has doubled. Which card do
you choose after each of the above auctions?
Like yesterday, partner’s double is certainly made
for penalties — not take out. But it is also conven-
tionally lead directing. Partner is effectively saying
that he’ll defeat the contract if you lead a specific
suit. in the first auction, he wants you to lead the
suit bid by dummy; he may have been going to bid
hearts himself before North did it (remember that
1 ♥ may be made on only a moderate 4-card suit).
So you lead ♥7.
With auction (b), you have to use a bit of imagina-
tion. Partner is showing a long solid suit with an
outside entry — you have to guess which suit, which
is normally not too difficult. it is probably a major,
because the opponents have not used Stayman.
And your own spade holding makes that suit look
unlikely — so, again you lead ♥7, and find partner
with: ♠xxx ♥kQ J10x ♦Ax, ♣xxx. Without partner’s
double, you might well have led a spade.
