Gas bills drop
as price falls
M ORe than one million
Bulb energy customers will
have lower gas bills after
wholesale prices dropped.
The supplier pledged to
pass on the savings to
users of gas and electricity.
It means they will be £
a year better off.
Bulb boss Hayden Wood
said: “It’s great we’re able to
cut gas bills for over one
million homes.”
But bills of electricity
only customers will rise by
£22 from next month after
the firm had to pay more
to use the grid.
Toxic air kills
9m per year
A IR pollution causes about
8.8 million premature
deaths annually – and re
duces life expectancy by
three years, a study shows.
Breathing and heart
problems caused by toxic
air take more years off your
life than smoking (2.
years), all forms of violence
(0.3), HIV/AIDS (0.7) or
malaria (0.6), it found.
The research, published
in the journal Cardiovas
cular Research, also
suggests global life expec
tancies would increase by
more than a year if fossil
fuels were no longer used.
MPs likely to
booze more
MPs really do down more
booze than the average
person, research shows.
They are more likely to
drink four times a week
and tot up at least 10 units
of alcohol a day.
That equates to around
a bottle of wine, or five
pints, or 10 shots of a spirit.
Some 146 of the 650 MPs
took a survey in 2016, of
whom 37% were women.
Dr Tony Rao, of King’s
College London, said: “The
overall rate of risky
drinking was higher than
in the english population.”

when she took the job of
Home Secretary last year.
On Saturday, Sir Philip
Rutnam resigned from his
role as the Home Office’s
most senior civil servant,
blaming a “vicious”
campaign against him.
He indicated he
plans to take
the Government to an employment
tribunal. Cabinet minister Michael
Gove said a probe has been launched
to “establish the facts”. Ms Patel
denies bullying or mistreating staff.

A FORmeR aide of Priti Patel
attempted suicide after being
bullied by her, it has been alleged.
It was reportedly claimed the
Home Secretary shouted at the
woman, telling her to “get lost”.
The aide allegedly took an over
dose in her office in 2015.
After she became unre
sponsive, her partner was
called, according to legal
correspondence reported
by the BBC.
The letter said the
woman took a further
overdose at home in what
was described as a suicide
attempt. She is thought to
have been a member of
Ms Patel’s private office
while the Tory was
employment Minister.
It was said the staff
member alleged she was told Ms
Patel had decided to dismiss her
because she did not “like her face”.
It is alleged the department settled
out of court for £25,000 in 2017 after
the woman threatened to bring
a legal claim of bullying,
harassment and discrimi
nation on racial and disa
bility grounds.
The PM’s official spokes
man refused to say whether
a probe will take place. And
he declined to say if No

400 workers facing the sack in steel takeover
SOME 400 steelworkers are
expected to lose their jobs as
part of the takeover of failed
British Steel.
Chinese firm Jingye emailed
employees at the plant in
Scunthorpe, Lincs, telling them
they either had a job offer or
were axed. Others are on
“gardening leave” until March
9 while decisions are made.
One steelworker said:
“People have been told they
are not allowed on the site and
their licence plates are being
taken off the system, which
suggests that they will be
getting laid off for good.”
Alun Davies, of the
Community union, said:
“Highly skilled, hard-working,
steelworkers are being left out
in the cold. The union are
offering support.” CAMPAIGN
