PHIL FODEN hopes his
starring role in Manchester
City’s Carabao Cup win
can catapult him into
England’s Euro 2020
squad.
Foden, 19, was man of the
match at Wembley as City
beat Aston Villa 2-1, his
performance boosting his
chances of earning a first
England call-up.
Even though Gareth
Southgate was at Everton on
Sunday, he will find it hard to
omit Foden from his next
squad after watching a rerun
of the youngster’s energetic
display. The England boss
names his squad for

have,” he said. “But hopefully
Gareth was watching and
hopefully saw things he liked.
“That’s all I can do, just
show what I can do every
time I play and see where it
takes me.
“We haven’t spoken much,
but Gareth has said in a few
places he’s keeping a close
eye on me.
“It was the best experience
for me, playing in a cup final
for City. It’s a dream come
true for me to play at
Wembley as well.

prospect of making the
England squad this summer,
Foden was diplomatic but
hinted he believes he can.
“I want to be there
obviously, but it’s very
against Villa – in contrast to
his usual central role –
displaying his versatility, a
huge strength in tournament
football. Asked if he allowed
himself to think about the
friendlies against Italy and
Denmark this month, and
Foden played himself into
contention with his
Wembley wizardry.
An assist for Sergio
Aguero’s opener, a sublime
first touch with his outstep
and a marauding display
with the ball at his feet have
given Southgate much to
ponder.
He has a wealth of young
English attacking midfield
talent to pick from, including
Jack Grealish, James
Maddison, Mason Mount,
Jadon Sancho and Callum
Hudson-Odoi.

Wembley scorer Ally Samatta is
convinced that Aston Villa will beat
the drop.
His goal in the 2-1 Carabao Cup
final defeat by manchester City had
them dancing in the streets of his
Tanzania homeland.
Now he is on a mission to spark
mass celebrations in birmingham b 6
by spearheading Villa’s bid for safety.
It was only the striker’s fifth game
since his £8million transfer from
Genk in January. The move has
sparked a wave of interest back
home, where he enjoys hero status.
Samatta’s diving header was his
second goal for his new club and he
firmly believes Villa can haul
themselves out of the bottom three.
Wins for relegation rivals West
Ham, Watford and Norwich
completed a bad weekend for the
club. but Samatta (above) said:
“everyone is confident and
everybody has positive energy. I’m
sure we’ll stay up.
“We saw the results, but we only
concentrate on our games. We have
to focus on getting as many points
as possible. As a team we always
want to win. It’s just a matter of time
until we catch the pace and start
winning games.”
Regarding their Wembley defeat,
he added: “It was not a bad
performance and if we continue
working hard, we have a chance. The
character is there and everybody
believes. There is just something
missing, but we are going to get it.”
He will not let Wembley heartache
get in the way of shooting Villa out of
the danger zone, starting at
leicester next monday.
“It’s the past,” said Samatta. “We
didn’t win the cup. Now we’re
focusing on the next game.”
