seeing red Ancelotti is
dismissed by ref Kavanagh
By david Maddock
CARLO ANCELOTTI is
hopeful he will escape a
ban despite being charged
by the FA after becoming
the first Premier League
manager to receive a red
card.
The Everton manager
will be hit with a
disciplinary case of
improper conduct after
referee Chris Kavanagh
brandished the card at the
end of a dramatic game
with Manchester United.
Previously no cards were
shown under Premier
League rules when
managers were sent off.
Ancelotti demanded an
explanation after Dominic
Calvert-Lewin’s ‘winner’
was ruled out for offside.
He marched over to the
referee at the end of the
game and was told to leave
the field of play by
Kavanagh.
The Blues boss visited
the referee’s room
afterwards, for what he
explained was a polite and
friendly conversation.
During the exchange,
they suggested there was a
“misunderstanding” and
Ancelotti is still confident
he will be hit with a lesser
punishment of a fine and
warning.

W ATFORD’s survival hopes
have been dealt a
shattering blow with key
man Gerard Deulofeu set to
miss the rest of the season.
The Hornets’ creative
spark (below) will undergo
surgery after rupturing his
anterior cruciate
ligament in
saturday’s
shock 3-0
win over
Liverpool.
Manager
Nigel Pearson
admitted the injury is a
serious setback for
Watford, who are only out
of the Premier League drop
zone on goal difference.
“He is probably going to
be out for the rest of the
season,” said Pearson.
“For sure Geri is going to
be a miss for us.”

for me, I’m gutted about it,
my season’s over,” said the
former Liverpool, Chelsea
and Manchester City star.
“It was upsetting that the
appeal panel overturned the
original, highly-qualified
panel’s ruling.”
“I just don’t think it’s the
right thing for me to
continue accepting wages
from a team that I can’t
contribute to.”
The FA were unhappy
after Sturridge (above),
30, was found guilty last
July of breaking
betting rules over a
potential transfer in
January 2018.
He was fined
£75,000 and banned
for six weeks – four
suspended – by an
independent
commission, who
found him guilty of
just two of a raft of
charges.
Sturridge was said
to have told his
brother to bet on a
transfer to Sevilla,
although he actually went
on loan to West Brom.
