Go direct to bag best hotel deals
It is cheaper to book a room directly with
a hotel than online, a study has revealed.
Which? found eight out of 10 rooms
cost less after phoning than using popular
booking websites such as Booking.com.
In one example, it found savings of 12%,
plus a free upgrade, when booking
directly with a hotel in Cornwall, for £150,
compared to £170 with Booking.com.
Hotels were also able to offer incentives
such as discounts on spa treatments, free
breakfast and free parking.
Rory Boland, of Which?, said:
“Customers shouldn’t be duped into
thinking they’re getting the best price
from a hotel booking site.”
Booking.com said it was the most cost-
effective way to reach a global audience.

LOW-fat versions of dairy
products do not cut kids’
risk of obesity or heart
disease, a study suggests.
And kids eating low-fat
options replaced missing
calories with other foods.

is shocking to learn that this number of
veterans have taken their lives and much
more needs to be done to help.
“I have known several soldiers to take
their own lives, possibly as a result of
what they have experienced or seen in
combat, and it is always possible more
could have been done to help them.
“A young man who served under my
command took his own life having
served in Bosnia in his first
tour of duty and he had
actually sought help
because what he had seen
traumatised him.
“He had support and
was even involved in fund-
raising but he did commit
suicide. Another soldier I
knew committed suicide in
Belfast because of the
extreme stress of serving
there in the 1970s.
“the complexities of this
are so challenging and
difficult fully to understand – and this is
not helped if people are being treated in
far-flung parts of the country by medical
practitioners who do not understand
what they have been through.
“We need a dedicated service to help
these people.”

Post-traumatic stress

Former commander of

Richard Kemp said it was
“outrageous” our veterans

an increasing rate.
He said last night: “there
may be a powder keg

illnesses like PtSD and at last it appears
something is being done.
“If this problem among our brave men
and women in the armed forces is not
recognised very quickly it could be a
problem that will explode in our faces.
these people need our support.”
