Capital City
The city of Taipei is the capital and largest metropolitan area in Taiwan.
Currency
The New Taiwan dollar, code: TWD; symbol: NT$, also abbreviated as NT) is the official currency used in
Taiwan.
Language
Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language in Taiwan today. Many younger Taiwanese people,
especially in Taipei, have a good command of English.
Religion
In Taiwan, some people practice ‘pure’ Buddhism and some follow ‘pure’ Taoism. Far more, however,
follow one, or both, blended with folk beliefs.
Location and size
Taiwan straddles the Tropic of Cancer and is located less than 161 km from the southeast coast of
mainland China, from which it is separated by the Taiwan (Formosa) Strait. To the NE, and less than 129
km is the the Japanese Ryukyu Islands; the Philippine island of Luzon lies 370 km to the S.
Population
The current population (2020) of Taiwan is 23 813 000 giving it a population density of 673 per Km2.
Internet coverage
Internet services are also widely available, particularly in town areas.
