If you feel like checkingintoa young,

perfect. Walk in at sunsetandit feelslike
you’ve arrived at a well-heeledhouse
party – music pumping,cocktailsflowing,
lithe creatures splashingintheplunge
pool or gazing into thefirepit,the rest in
the rooftop bar plus a lonebarefoot
brunette curled up in thecutecorner
lounge with her laptop.HobieBeachis
literally stumbling distancefromthefront
door. The scale and styleis contemporary
boutique – weathered silver-greydecking
with built-in seating, cushionsingreywith
geometric pastel pillows.Thesea-facing
rooms open onto a semi-privatedeck
edged with indigenousmilkwoods,and
there are several comfortable,quieter
nooks behind the houseto hive off into.

Emily Moon River Lodge

Comprising16 cottage-suites set on stilts on a ridge

thatoverlooksa broadcurve of the Bitou River, Emily

Moon is, in my opinion,the best-value luxury lodge on the

GardenRoute.Roomsare large and tastefully decorated,

but it’s the deck with private, expansive views of the

pristinewetlandsbelowthat offers the extra sense of

luxury– like wakingup to hear the call of a fish eagle at

dawn.Thatsaid,owners Mark and Christine Valentine

havenotrestedontheir view laurels: interiors are cosy,

withpaintedtimberwalls covered in framed photographs,

artworksandantlersunder whirring fans. It’s very

atmospheric,the entire property treed and filled with

eclecticobjetstheValentines have collected from their

travelsthroughAfrica,Asia and Polynesia. It’s one of my

favouriteplacestostaybut sadly I’m not alone – if you

wanttostayhere,particularly over weekends, when the

wholelodgeis oftenbooked for weddings and special

events,bookwellinadvance.

ROOMTIPThe new deluxe luxury suites are exactly that,

but the standardluxuryones are still gorgeous and cost

R1 160 less. Ask for one with a fireplace – I really like Suite 3.
