    The linking from (119d) to (120b) is sketched in Figure 46. At the end
    of step 1 in (121), the clock has been tentatively identified as an undergoer,
    due to the passive voice of believe, and John and Mary have been inter­
    preted as actors, because of the passive morphology of the verb and the
    preposition by marking them. At step 3, the actor John in the matrix core
    is associated with the actor (x) argument in the LS of believe, and the actor
    Mary in the linked core is linked to the actor (y) argument in the LS of
    clean. However, there is no undergoer argument in the LS of believe to
    associate the clock with; the second argument of believe is a proposition
