A SYNOPSIS OF ROLE AND REFERENCE GRAMMAR 141

The first sentence, (129a), can be interpreted as either a WH-question, with
the meaning given, or a yes-no question with the meaning "does he think
someone stole the meat?". However, in (129b,c) táku "what" is outside the
PFD and therefore cannot be interpreted as a WH-word in a WH-question;
it must be interpreted as an indefinite pronoun in a yes-no question, as the
acceptable glosses indicate.
These facts follow from the principle governing the PFD in complex sen
tences presented in (111). Simplified representations of the operator and con
stituent projections of the sentences in (129) are given in Figure 49.
