CLAUSE COMBINING IN NOOTKA 251

(20:3,6)
not-iNDic-2sG say
"you did not say so"
(27:5)
not-iMPv-2sG thus-CAus
"do not do thus"
(27:3)

"now, you will be the first to spear"
(40:24)
long time-FiN-PAST-iNFER-lsG sleep
"evidently I have been a long time sleeping".

And from texts of personal reminiscence:

(130:22)
big-lsG sick
"I was very sick"
(130:14)
one-FiN-lsG see
"I alone saw him"
(134:14)
second time-MOM-FiN-lsG distribute property-
"it was the second time I had distributed property".
In clausal cosubordination the pronominal suffix, not being shared, is
in principle repeated. Unfortunately for this simple distinction, there are a
few instances in the latter texts where a repeated first person pronoun is
absent, even though clausal cosubordination might be expected:^17
