The first attempt at a DVX here, (42), broke down because Antonio did
not know what the word ‘Cheltenham’ meant, so he initiated, repeating
the word form (Inner) with a questioning intonation which gave it the
interactive force of ‘Please can you explain this word?’ (Outer). The teacher
explained, and Antonio re-initiated himself, independently of the teacher
and Constantine replied ‘Yes I do’; the teacher’s final Follow-up ‘Um hm.
Good’ (Outer) shows that both have completed their part in the exchange
successfully.
Exchange (45) between husband and wife on the topic of ‘washing the
dishes’ is fair proof that the message is secondary to the form of the
