Thehorizon beckons...

These twophotosofMarietjievander
Merweand Ronelvan Wyk, both from
Pretoria,may lookdifferent, but they
actuallytell thesame story.

Marietjie“Myhusband,Carel,and Ipacked
ourcaracouple ofyears ago andwent
touringthroughNamibiawithourtent.
Between SwakopmundandHenties Bay,
wepulledover to admire thespectacular

surroundings.The silence on thephoto
speaksto me.”

Ronel“I recentlycompletedthe Sterrewag
Endurohike–whereyou walk 193kmin
10 days.Onour waythere,westayedat
aguestfarm justoutsideCarnarvon,and
this is whereIshotthe sunsetwiththetrain
track.Ijustcompletedgo! magazine’s photo
courseand experimentedabit.”

Onecouldimagine both pictureson

awalliny our home.Eachlands cape
has aunique charmand uses thesame
compositional principles: thehorizon lies
on athirdline,with thediagonalelement
thatdrawsone’s eyetothe horizon:in
Marietjie ’s pictureitisthe poles,and on
Ronel’s photothe railwayline. Butlook
at thepictu resagain; neither onereally
has afocalpoint. Thepoles andthe tracks
draw your attention, but don’t lead to
aspecific point. Youmust thereforestand
back and enjoy the photoasawhole.

Winged flight

When shooting birds,you have
to be wideawake. This is exactly
whatCharmaineVenterof Cape
Town waswhen shereleased the
shutter here.

“I took thephotoofacormorant early
one morning inCape Town. It’s at the
Intaka Island,atahideIvisit regularly
over weekends.It’sone of those places
whereIfeel happywith mycamera.”

Shooting birds is an artoni ts own,
and abeautiful photowillalways be
abeautiful photo.
Charmaine freezes the birdinits

flighthere, and that’s something
one cannot observe with the naked
eye. Youimmediately lookat its
beak,and yousee it has something
like atwig in hismouth. Also ,it
looks as if the bird’s leftwing just
touchesthe water,and theripple
on thewater als ocause sthe bird’s
reflectiontobreak so that yousee
only thetwo wings.
Thelow lightmakes foragood
photo, but it would have been
better if the birdwereflying
towards you–not thatyou have
anycontrolover it! Furthermore,
one cancropthe frame closerto the
birdand itsreflectionsothere’sless
negativespace.
