208 GEOMETRY • PARALLEL LINES

Parallel lines would never meet,
even if the lines continued forever

Curved parallel lines
Parallel lines can be wavy
like these tracks, or zig-zag. What
matters is that they are always
the same distance apart, or
equidistant, and never meet.

Non-parallel lines
These tracks are not parallel. You can
see that they are not the same distance from
each other all along their lengths. If the tracks
carried on, they would meet at one end.

Parallel lines
These ski tracks are
parallel. No matter how
long you make the
lines, they will never
meet, or intersect.

When lines are
parallel, we mark
them with small
arrowheads, like this:

Parallel lines

When two or more lines are exactly the same distance
from each other all along their lengths, they are called
parallel lines.

At this end, the non-parallel
lines get further apart the
longer they continue

You can’t have just one parallel
line. They always come in sets
of two or more.
