BUD VASES
You will need: 2 celeriacs, spoon, knife, teaspoons
1 Slice off the tops and bottoms of a pair of celeriacs
to make flat surfaces.
2 Hollow them out with a spoon until the
walls are around 1.5cm thick.
3 Make a hole in the side with a knife (this
allows the sweet resonance to escape).
Play with your fingers or a pair of teaspoons.
Warm up with double strokes (right right, left
left) on each bongo – also known as mama-
daddies – or the paradiddle (RLRR, LRLL)
before making up your own tunes. Alternatives
to celeriac include swedes, turnips or pumpkins.
The fresher the better. Combine with a pepper
shaker for a complete rhythm section.
‘99 Red Balloons’
by Nena (1984)
The story depends on whether you
know enough German to understand
the original (‘99 Luftballons’), or
were raised on the English version,
and the difference is a story in itself.
Two events inspired the original: in
pre-unification West Berlin, Nena’s
guitarist attended a gig, where a
theatrical release of balloons led him
to speculate about them f loating over
into the East of the city. Separately,
in Arizona, students assembled 99
balloons to mimic the appearance
of a UFO. In the original German,
balloons thus mistaken prompt an
escalating military conf lict. In Kevin
McAlea’s English lyrics, however, the
balloons trigger a nuclear warning
system – and eventually war. Nena
disliked the overt politicism of the
translation, and never played it live.
Handily, the German version was
the hit in most places, including the
US, Australia and New Zealand.
