N

orth Darfur is one of the
most drought-prone areas
of Sudan. Climate change
has worsened the cycle of
prolonged droughts and f lash f looding,
meaning that growing crops and
raising animals is incredibly tough.
An inf lux of people moving back to
the villages – who were once displaced
by conf lict – has meant more trees are
lost for firewood and more land has
been turned to desert.

DESERT NO MORE
Practical Action has helped farmers
repair dams and build irrigation
systems to re-green the desert. They’ve
planted trees and reseeded pasture
land so that people can feed their
animals. Not only this, farmers have
learned how to improve harvests and
now not only survive, but thrive on
what they grow. What’s more, peace
has finally been restored because
communities are no longer competing
for valuable water and grazing land.

EMPOWERING PEOPLE
Sitelnisa (pictured right) is a 40-year-
old mother of two, living in Majzoub,
where rains have become erratic.
Villagers cut down trees because
they believed they attracted birds
to the crops. As a result, the land
became hard and dry. Things changed
when Sitelnisa started working with
Practical Action. She received 100
trees to plant, which helped to fertilise
the soil and protect her crops. And
because they are Arabic gum trees,
she can use the bark to make medicine.
Sitelnisa’s life has been transformed. “I
have been able to improve my income,”
she says. “I now produce more, and
when one of my children became sick,
I was able to pay for an operation.”
