remove it by lifting a section of the seam allowance and
removing the paper shape. (I use tweezers for this step.)
Then repress the fabric shape and put it under a weight
or book to let it cool. Use the just-removed paper square
again and repeat Steps 3–6 to create another A square.
While this new square is cooling, remove the paper from
the other A square. You should constantly be working
back and forth (6 from each paper square) to create 12
fabric squares from the 2 freezer paper A squares.

uuu Noteworthy uuu
I use two freezer-paper squares because it allows me
to constantly be working with one or the other to
create the 12 fabric squares I need without wasting
time. If I cut 12 paper squares, the chance for discrep-
ancy in size is increased.

  1. Prepare the remaining squares (B–F) similarly to
create 12 fabric squares of each size.

FABRIC SQUARES PLACEMENT

  1. Holding an A square with tweezers, apply a tiny
thin line of fabric glue in the middle of opposite seam
    allowances.

Glue along seam allowance.

  1. Still holding the square by a corner with twee-
zers, place the square onto the background by moving
it toward the center until each corner of the square
lines up with a line on the background. Repeat for the
remaining 11 A squares. Evaluate each square carefully,
making any position adjustments or changes before
moving to the next square. You are looking for sameness
of fit all the way around. Appliqué all A’s and then all
    B’s for the best results.

  2. Using matching-colored thread, appliqué each square
in place. Be sure the squares are held securely and not
    shifting.

  3. Position the 12 B squares between 2 A squares,
matching their corners to marked lines on the

background. Glue baste in place, evaluate, and appliqué.
Repeat for C, D, E, and F fabric squares, each posi-
tioned between the 2 squares preceding it and aligning
each corner to a line. Do not press yet. When all 72
squares are appliquéd, continue to use the marked lines
on the background for the next steps.

  1. Trim the appliqué block to an exact 161/2 ̋ square,
using the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines on the
background fabric for guidance. Chalk the cutting lines
equidistant (81/4 ̋) from the center horizontally and verti-
cally and measure twice before cutting.

  1. The 3 different sizes of circle shapes (J, K, L) are pre-
pared in the same way as the squares. You will need 18
    dark blue J’s, 7 dark blue K’s, and 12 magenta L’s. Refer
to the photo (page 99) for placement.
