Outer Layer of Star Points

CUTTING
Make templates for G, H, and I, adding 1/4 ̋ seam allow-
ances to all sides of each shape. Punch holes at the dots
and transfer all reference lines, information, and grain-
line arrows. Shapes G and Gg are the same size and
shape; only one template is required to reflect all lines.

G: Cut 24 from accent and 48 from medium light for
36 ̋ Sedona design only.

Gg: Cut 24 from oversized unit.

H: Cut 24 from deep dark and 24 from medium light.

I: Cut 24 from a strip unit.

G/GG UNITS
The process for making the G unit and the Gg unit is
the same as for A and Aa (page 118).

  1. If you are making the 36 ̋ Sedona, you have already
cut 72 A diamond shapes; set them aside.

  2. For both the 18 ̋ and 36 ̋ Sedona, cut 2 strips
    11/4 ̋ × 40 ̋ from each of 2 fabrics.

  3. Sew Strip 1 to 2, offsetting by the finished width of
the strip. Press the seams open and trim the seam allow-
ance to a generous 1/8 ̋. Keeping strip units right side up,
    cut one end at a 45° angle. Cut 24 segments 1 ̋ (11/4 ̋)
    from each strip unit.

  4. Pair 2 appropriate segments together and make a
mark over the seam 1/4 ̋ from the sewing edge on both
segments. Pin the intersection and sew. When the inter-
section is perfectly matched, press the seam open and
    trim. Make 24.
    5. Place the Gg template face down on the wrong side
of the oversized fabric diamond (see page 119). Align the
center and the lines of the template with the intersection
and seams of the fabric. Mark the dots and carefully cut
    around the template. Make 24.
    6. If you are making the 36 ̋ Sedona, join 3 G’s to a Gg;
    make 24.

I UNITS

  1. Cut 2 strips 2 ̋ × 40 ̋ (4 strips 3 ̋ × 40 ̋) from each of
2 fabrics—a deep dark and a medium light.

  2. Sew together a strip from each fabric. Press the seam
open and trim the seam allowance to a generous 1/8 ̋.

  3. Place the I template face down on the wrong side of
the strip unit. Mark the dots and carefully cut around
the template. Cut 24. (See Caution, page 120.)
