Circular Designs

In addition to the usual tools of graph paper, pencil, ruler, and eraser, circular designs require a compass (a tool used
to draw partial or full circles, determine midpoints, and hold measurements), a protractor (a tool used to determine
angles), a rotary cutting mat, and removable tape.

  1. To draw a circle with a compass, open the com-
    pass the distance of the radius (e.g., a 6 ̋ circle has a 3 ̋
    radius).

A standard compass opens to approximately 6 ̋, which
allows you to draw a circle approximately 12 ̋. One
way to draw larger circles is to use a yardstick com-
pass, which can be found at any art supply or drafting
store, as well as at some quilt shops. The yardstick
compass has two separate pieces (one is the pivot
point and one is the pencil) that each attach to a
yardstick or long ruler.

How to Use a Compass to Draw a Circle

The most important feature of a compass is its ability
to hold its set position firmly. One with a crossbar and
a wheel is most dependable, though for years I have
used an inexpensive school compass and a disposable
mechanical pencil. I like the mechanical pencil, because
it provides a consistent line weight without having to
sharpen it. To prevent the pivot point from slipping or
moving, and to keep the graph paper in place, position
a rotary cutting mat under your graph paper and tape
your graph paper to the mat. Pushing the pivot point of
the compass through the paper into the mat will help
keep the pivot point in place while drawing.

  1. Choose the size of the circle (e.g., 6 ̋).

Circle: A closed plane curve such that all its points
are equidistant from the center
Diameter: The measurement across the circle,
through the center from one side to the opposite side
(the size of the circle)
Radius: The measurement from the center of the
circle to its edge (half the diameter)
Circumference: The distance around the edge of
the circle
Arc: Any part of a curved line Circumfer
