The distance between the reference arc
and the segment arc determines the
height of the scallop. The further the
reference arc is from the segment arc,
the flatter the scallop will be; the closer
it is to the segment arc, the higher the
scallop will be.

  1. To find and mark the midpoint
of each segment for the scallop
placement (half of 15° is 7.5°), posi-
tion the protractor. Beginning at one
edge of the square, make a mark at
7.5° on the reference arc. From there,
make 5 marks at 15° increments:
    22.5°, 37.5°, 52.5°, 67.5°, and 82.5°.

the handle and segment arcs only.
Repeat for the remaining degree
markings to complete the fan. All 6
segments should be exactly the same
width.

Now that you have some experience
using a compass and protractor,
try these design variations, which
are simple to accomplish and can
be added to the basic fan we just
drafted. Once you understand the
process, you will be creating your
own designs in no time. On any
of the styles covered here, if you
place your mirrors (page 91) along
the dashed lines, you will see the
complete circular design, which
potentially creates a Dresden Plate,
Mariner’s Compass, Sunflower,
Sunburst, and so forth. To make
design changes to the basic fan,
you will need to do two things: add
reference arcs and determine the
midpoint of the curved lines or seg-
ments. For these, you will need the
compass and protractor.

This block adds a curve to the
smooth edge of the fan. When
multiplied by four, it creates a lovely
Dresden Plate block.

Scalloped-Edge Fan Block

TO DRAFT A 6 ̋ (FINISHED)
BLOCK:

  1. Draw a 6 ̋ square on graph paper.

  2. Draw a handle arc 15/8 ̋ from the
corner, a reference arc 43/4 ̋ from the
corner, and a segment arc 5 ̋ from
the corner. (See Step 2 on page 21
for more details.) The scallop will be
added above the segment arc line.

Draw a handle, reference,
and segment arcs.

  1. Using your protractor, divide
    the fan into 6 segments: 15°, 30°,
    45°, 60°, and 75°. (See Steps 3–5 on
    pages 21–22 for more details.)
