CIRCULARDESIGNS 27

  1. Find the center of each square
by lightly drawing a line across each
    square diagonally in both directions.
The intersection is the center mark.

  2. Place the point of the compass at
the center of the center square and
expand the compass so the pencil
reaches the center of an adjacent
    square. Draw a circle.

Draw a 9-square grid, find the center of
each square, and draw a circle.

  1. Without changing the distance of
the compass, place the point of the
compass at the center of an adjacent
    square; the compass pencil should
reach the center of another square.
Draw another circle. Repeat for each
square (7 more times) for a total of
9 circles. The center of every square
is a pivot point from which to draw
a circle. The center square becomes
the pattern for your block. There are
    only 3 template shapes: A, B, and C.

Draw 9 circles (total) to create
the pattern.

Equilateral Triangle

An equilateral triangle is one in which all three sides
measure the same and in which each side is connected
to the other at a 60° angle. Although many quilt pat-
terns use equilateral triangles, the pattern that first
comes to mind is 1000 Pyramids, a time-honored
traditional quilt pattern that uses only this one shape
(see Linda Cockrell’s wonderful quilt below). Any size equilateral triangle is
easily drafted from a circle. To know the size of the circle to begin with, you
must first decide the size of each side of the equilateral triangle. Let’s choose
11/2 ̋ per side. The measurement of each triangle side (11/2 ̋) is also the radius
of the beginning circle, which means the diameter of the circle is 3 ̋ (diam-
eter is the circle size, or twice the radius).

TO DRAFT A 11/2 ̋ (FINISHED) EQUILATERAL TRIANGLE:

  1. Use your compass to draw a 3 ̋ circle (11/2 ̋ radius; see page 19). The
center of the circle is point C. Keep the compass at this setting.
