10-Pointed Star Block
A 10-Pointed Star block is a progression of the
5-Pointed Star block (page 33) and has huge potential
for design. Once this star is drafted, it is up to you to
decide which lines to keep and which to erase. This is
also the time to add design lines. Here I describe how
I drafted the 6 ̋ 10-Pointed Star block in the sampler
project quilt on page 99.
Sampler Block—10-Pointed Star
TO DRAFT A 6 ̋ (FINISHED) BLOCK:
- Draw a 6 ̋ square. Using a compass, draw a 6 ̋ circle
inside the square. - Using the round protractor, divide the circle by 10
(360° ÷ 10 = 36°). (See page 33 for proper positioning.)
Working clockwise from 360°/0°, mark every 36° at the
edge of the protractor (36°, 72°, 108°, 144°, 180°, 216°,
252°, 288°, 324°, 360°). - Transfer each angle marking to the circle line by
aligning the ruler edge with both the center of the circle
and the angle marking (page 33).

- Position the paper so that the point touching the
middle of the top line is the 360° mark. Working clock-
wise, number each angle marking 1– 10. Connect 1 to 5,
5 to 9, 9 to 3, 3 to 7, and 7 to 1.
- With a red pencil, connect 2 to 6, 6 to 10, 10 to 4, 4
to 8, and 8 to 2. - With a blue pencil, connect through the center 1 to
6, 2 to 7, 3 to 8, 4 to 9, and 5 to 10. - Add additional design lines or erase unnecessary lines
as needed, leaving only seamlines.
