Drafting for the Creative Quilter

(Marcin) #1

CIRCULARDESIGNS 37

  1. Lay your protractor over the
square, exactly as shown in the
diagram. Line DC should be in
line with the 0° marking, and line
BC should be in line with the 90°
    marking.

  2. Use your pencil to mark points
    at 25°, 35°, 45°, 55°, and 65°, exactly
    as shown in the diagram.

Position the protractor and mark
degree markings.

  1. Position your C-Thru ruler
to intersect with the 25° mark and
point C and beyond the farthest arc.
Then, draw a straight line between
the 2 farthest arcs, exactly as shown
    in the diagram.

  1. Next, position your C-Thru
ruler to intersect with the 35° mark
and point C, and mark a straight
line in the upper arc. Repeat this
step with the 45°, 55°, and 65° mark-
ings to complete the shapes within
the arc section, exactly as shown in
    the diagram.

Complete the shapes within the arc.

  1. Repeat Step 16 in the upper
left-hand corner of the square. It
may be helpful to rotate your graph
paper so that point A is in the lower
    right-hand corner.

  2. Repeat Steps 17–19, placing
the protractor at point A, to mark
straight lines in the opposite arc
    section.

  3. Notice that the line joining
the post to the end of the pieced
arc is curved. When sewing these
2 pieces together, the curves will
be opposing and will require some
    maneuvering to sew smoothly. You
can easily avoid this situation if you
mark straight lines from the tip of
the melon section to points E and
F, exactly as shown in the diagram.
Do this again at the opposite set of
    posts.

Straighten the curved lines.

  1. Use the eraser to eliminate the
points made in Steps 17 and 21.

  2. At this point you have drafted
one-quarter of the ring and all of
the shapes required to make the
    Double Wedding Ring. However,
if you would like to draft the entire
ring or view the entire pattern, you
can repeat the previous steps 3 more
times. Or you may choose to trace

the block or make photocopies of
it and tape the sections together to
form the complete ring, exactly as
shown in the diagram. Otherwise,
this completes the Double Wedding
Ring. There are 5 templates shapes:
#1 the inner segments of the pieced
arc, #2 and #2R the ends of the
pieced arc, #3 the melon shape, #4
the post, and #5 the large back-
ground piece. Note that template
shape #5 is only one-quarter of the
entire shape. To achieve the full
shape, the 2 straight sides must be
placed on the fold when cutting the
fabric shape. Indicate this on the
template shape. Do not add seam
allowance to these 2 sides when
making your plastic template.
