If you have a compass that holds its position well,
set the expansion at 1/2 ̋ and place the pivot point on
the corner of the center square. Then make a mark
over the diagonal line by swiveling the pencil point
across the diagonal line. Next, move the pivot point to
where your mark and the diagonal line intersect and
swivel the pencil point over the diagonal line again.
Continue toward the corner and repeat until you have
five 1/2 ̋ markings. Check the compass measurement
often to be sure it is holding its position.

  1. Using a regular lead pencil and a ruler, draw a
straight line at each division mark along the diagonal
lines, parallel to the side of the center on-point square.
To help yourself draw straight parallel lines, position a
ruler line exactly over the diagonal line you are working
from. You should have 5 parallel lines 1/2 ̋ apart. Repeat
for the remaining 3 corners. To check for accuracy, fold
the drawing in half horizontally and hold it up to a
lightbox or window. Then fold it in half vertically and
check again. Then do the same for each diagonal.

  2. To create the trapezoid shapes, erase the original
horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines and all right angle
lines and corners to reveal the 6 ̋ Pineapple block.

Erase lines to create shapes.

Now that you have an understanding of how to draft
the common Pineapple block, it will be easy to make
changes to customize your block. Experiment with strip
width, corner size, and center size. Try adding a square
on-point within the center square, or remove the original
square to reveal a square on-point for the center. Refer
to the bibliography (page 127) for references on this ver-
satile, graphic, traditional block.
