8-POINTEDSTARBLOCkS 51
Star and Chains Block
This block is similar to Rolling Star
(page 50), but it has an
additional layer of diamonds
around the center star. You will also
be labeling additional intersections, so watch the illus-
trations carefully and move slowly.
TO DRAFT A 6 ̋ (FINISHED) BLOCK:
- Draft a 6 ̋ Kaleidoscope block (page 47); do not erase
any lines. - Where the horizontal and vertical lines meet the out-
side edge, label those 1, 3, 5, and 7, working clockwise
from the top. - Where the diagonal lines intersect at the 4 corners,
label those intersections 2, 4, 6, and 8, working clock-
wise from the upper right corner.

Draft a Kaleidoscope block. Then label the
horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines.
- With a red pencil, connect 1 to 3 to 5 to 7 to 1 to
create an on-point square. - With a blue pencil, connect 2 to 4 to 6 to 8 to 2 to
create a square (you have now also created 2 triangles
and a diamond). - Inside the blue square, where the horizontal and
vertical lines meet the blue line, label those 9, 11, 13,
and 15. - Where the diagonal lines intersect the red line, label
those 10, 12, 14, and 16.
8. With an orange pencil, connect 9 to 11 to 13 to 15
to 9 to create a second, smaller on-point square.
9. With a green pencil, connect 10 to 12 to 14 to 16 to
10 to create another square.
10. The intersection where the orange and green lines
intersect on each of the 4 sides of the green square
divides the square into the basic underlying structure.
(Refer to page 45 for clarification.)
11. To draft the small inner star, start on top and work
clockwise as you connect each A to an opposite B and to
the second B. To lessen the confusion of so many lines,
connect 1 A to 2 B’s and then turn the paper a quarter
turn and repeat. Note that the 2 smaller diamonds are
the same size.

Use a different color for each step.
- Erase all unnecessary lines, leaving only seamlines.
