Interlocking Squares Block

This is one of my favorite blocks.
It has nothing to do with a star,
although the center octagon shape
is already set up to draft one inside
(see pages 31–32).

TO DRAFT A 6 ̋ (FINISHED) BLOCK:

  1. Draft a 6 ̋ Kaleidoscope block (page 47); do not erase
    any lines or letters.

  2. Where the horizontal and vertical lines meet the
    outer edge, label those 1, 3, 5, and 7.

  3. Where the AB diagonal lines at the corners intersect
with the block’s diagonal line, label those intersections
    2, 4, 6, and 8.

Draft a Kaleidoscope block; then label the
horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines.

  1. With a red pencil, connect 1 to 3 to 5 to 7 to 1 to
    create an on-point square.

  2. With a blue pencil, connect 2 to 4 to 6 to 8 to 2 to
create a square, extending the lines to the edge.
    6. Where the horizontal and vertical lines intersect the
blue line, label those intersections 9, 11, 13, and 15.
    7. Where the block’s diagonal line intersects the side of
    the on-point square, label those intersections 10, 12, 14,
    and 16.
    8. With a red pencil, connect 9 to 11 to 13 to 15 to 9 to
create a second, smaller on-point square.
    9. With a green pencil, connect 10 to 12 to 14 to 16 to
10 to create a second, small square.

Use a different color for each step.

  1. Erase all unnecessary lines, leaving only seamlines.
