Draw a square, and then
draw diagonal corner lines.

  1. Shape F is the kite shape. The long sides are equal
to 3 feathers, or 3 ̋. The short sides of the F kite are the
same as the short sides of the G corner triangles, or 11/4 ̋.
On 8-to-the-inch graph paper, draw 2 lines 3 ̋ long at
45° angles from each other. The short sides of the F kite
are each 11/4 ̋ long at 90° angles to each 3 ̋ line.

Decimal Equivalent Chart

When working on a calculator, answers are given in
decimals rather than fractions—decimals are calculator
numbers, while fractions are ruler numbers. During the
calculation process of each drafting step, work with dec-
imals until all the calculating for that step is complete.
Then refer to the Decimal Equivalent Chart and convert
your answer to a fraction. If the answer on the calculator
screen is not in this chart, find the two numbers it falls
between and subtract to find the difference from both.
Use the decimal equivalent that is the closest to your
number. The difference between the numbers listed in
the chart is^1 / 32 ̋. If your number were to fall in between
two numbers, the difference would be^1 / 64 ̋. This is an

acceptable tolerance for patchwork. There may also
be times when the number on the calculator would be
most accurate if it were to remain in tenths; in that case,
you would use 10-to-the-inch graph paper to draw your
shapes. Decimal equivalents matter; use your good sense
to determine your equivalents.
