Six Unity Knot
The sky, the earth and the four directions of north, east, south and west form
the six components of unity. Since ancient times, the Chinese have used the
phrase “The six unity in springtime” to denote that everything on earth pros-
pers in spring. This knot, with its six petals, originates from the ten accord
knot (see Chinese Knotting, page 86), hence the name six unity.
Tying
This knot, made from a single cord, is similar to the five happiness knot (page
86) except that it has six hooked-up double coin knots instead of five. Using
the same tying technique, other compound knots with an even number of
knots, such as eight or ten, can form the petals. Since the knot goes out of
shape easily, it is advisable to tie it with stiff cords and sew the intersections.
Tips
- When the knot is completed, the cords should overlap in pairs, with a neat
one-on-top one-below pattern. - Make sure that all six double coin knots are identical and are hooked up
snugly to form a tight circle.
1 Tie a double coin knot with
both cord ends.
4 Tie each cord end separately into a double coin
knot, then hook them up with the first knot.
