DIAGONAL WEAVE TASSEL 113

Diagonal Weave Tassel

As with the love knot (page 96), the head and cords of this tassel originate
from the same center. However, the technique employed is more like that of
the horizontal weave tassel (page 116), except that the latitudinal cord is
woven diagonally downward to form the tassel head.

Tying

Fold a bundle of cords and tie the bend with a thread. Pull the thread through
the hole of a bead until the bundle of cords and the bead are close together.
Invert the bead and arrange the cord tassels so that they cover the bead even-
ly. Fasten the cords tightly just below the bead either with the thread
protruding from the bead or with a new thread. This completes the love
tassel. Invert the bead again. Treating the cords covering the bead as the lon-
gitudinal ones and the hanging cords as the latitudinal ones, pull down each
latitudinal cord in turn and thread it downward through its corresponding
longitudinal cord. Using a method similar to weaving cloth, pull each lati-
tudinal cord in turn across the first neighboring longitudinal one on the right
and weave it into the second neighboring longitudinal cord until all the lati-
tudinal cords are done. If you wish to narrow the gaps between the hanging
tassel cords, fold another thread and sew it into the base just below the head.
Finally, hook the remaining cord ends of the already completed knot forma-
tion into the tassel head with a crochet hook and sew in place.
To make a two-color diagonal weave tassel, wrap cords of two different
colors covered with strong glue around the hollow bead, employing the same
technique used for the horizontal weave tassel. Then, fasten the cords just
below the bead with a thread and arrange the cords neatly. Finally, weave each
latitudinal cord according to the technique described above. To make a tassel
with three colors or more, simply extend the procedure.

Tips

  • Use oblong beads or cylinders instead of round beads for variety.

  • The nearer you end the weaving of the latitudinal cords to the center of the
bead base, the denser the tassel cords become. To achieve the intended tassel
cord density, you can decide the exact place to end the weaving process.
