Hair Ornaments

See pages 28–29 for photographs of applications 1–14.

1

Brush the hair to the right, twist into
two separate strands and fasten with
threads. Make a double coin knot using
the double cord technique (see page 11
above). Flip over the body of the knot and
fasten with a hair clip, then hide the ends
of the hair strands behind the body of the
knot. Tie a red cord all the way along the
knot body.

2

String beads on a gold cord, fold it in
two uneven lengths and glue it in two
rows along the top of a comb, as shown.
Hang aru yi knot on each end of the cord.
Insert beads in the outer loops.

3

Use three cords to weave a three-layered hair band. First, bend some steel wire into the
shape of a hair band. Tie one cord tightly around the band on a slant. Tie the second cord
more loosely onto the band in such a way that the first cord is still visible below it. Fasten the
ends of the two cords to the tips of the steel wire with rubber bands. Tie the third cord into a
creeper knot (1), starting from the middle of the hair band and working toward the left tip of
the wire band. Tie another creeper knot (3) from the middle and work toward the right. Extend
the outer loops of the creeper knot lining the left side of the band into a cloverleaf knot (2).
Extend the outer loops of the creeper knots lining the right side of the band into a round
brocade knot with six outer loops (8), then tie each of the outer loops into a cloverleaf knot
(5–7). Extend the outer loops of the creeper knots lining the right side of the band into a clover-
leaf knot (11). Make creeper knots up to the right tip of the wire band. Bind both ends of the
third cord to the tips of the band with thread. Sew the outer loops of the creeper knots and
round brocade knot together, as well as the outer loops of cloverleaf knot 5 and 7, to keep the
knot formation firm.

4

This hairpin is made from silver cord.
Fold the cord in half and make a clover-
leaf knot (1). Use the right cord to make a
cloverleaf knot with two outer loops (2) fol-
lowed by another cloverleaf knot (4). Use the
left cord to make a cloverleaf knot in an anti-
clockwise direction (7), then another clover-
leaf knot with two outer loops (5) followed
by a cloverleaf knot (3). Make a ribbon knot
(6) and fix cloverleaf knots 1 and 7 onto each
loop of the knot, as shown above. Hide one
of the remaining cord ends behind the knot
body. Tie the remaining cord end into a clover-
leaf knot and hide it also behind the knot
body. Sew a bead in the middle of the outer
loops of each cloverleaf knot. Complete the
formation by sliding a hairpin into the back
of the ribbon knot.

5

Tie a pan chang
knot with a cord
but do not tighten the
knot yet. Take a second
cord, leave a suitable
length, then slide it inside the
pan chang knot, weaving all the
way along the right side. Tighten
the pan chang knot and hide the ends of
the second cord inside the knot body. Twist
each end of the first cord and bind with
thread (see page 24 above). With a third cord,
tie a san caiknot. Tie the cord ends into two
little loops and fasten with thread. Complete
the formation by tying the two knots onto
the hairpin.
