Ordinary fuse wire can be used
to make innovative hair clasps.
Tie a length of fuse wire into a good
luck knot, then gold plate it. Insert
love beans into the three outer loops.

6

Fold a cord and tie a cloverleaf knot
(1) at a suitable place, leaving some
cord length on both outer loops. String
an ornamental bead with both cord ends,
then separate them into left and right
cords. Tie each cord with the reserved
outer loops into a double coin knot (2, 3),
then tie the cord ends into a cloverleaf
knot (4) at the bottom of the bead. This
knot should be tied using the same tech-
nique as that of the cloverleaf knot resid-
ing in the ru yi knot. Finally, make a button
tassel (5). Some light colored cords can
be added to the tassel cords (see step 2,
page 113) for a more colorful tassel.

7

To decorate a scarf folded into a roll, tie a cord into a pan changknot (1), then pull both
cord ends to the back of the roll and around it and hook them to the outer loops on the
top part of the pan changknot. Tie two more cords into separate dragon knots (2, 3) (see
Chinese Knotting, page 68), hooking up the outer loop on each dragon’s head with the corner
loops of the pan changknot. Finally, cross wrap the cord ends hanging from the dragon’s body
around the scarf roll and tie a tight knot at the end of the roll. Fold over each cord end and
bind it with thread.

8

Tie a butterfly knot with a cord (1). Hide both cord ends
inside the knot body. Tie another two cords into a knot (2)
and string two porcelain beads. Pull both cords through butterfly
knot 1 from top to bottom and string a third bead. Tie each cord
end into a cloverleaf knot (3, 4) and bind with fine thread. To
wear this hair accessory, loop the shorter joined cords above the
butterfly knot onto a strand of hair, then pull the cord ends below
the third bead to tighten it. Cross wrap both cord ends around
the strand of hair and tie them into a knot.

9

Fold a cord and tie a pan changknot , but
do not tighten it yet. Pull a cord end from
the hair band through the body of the pan
changknot, string some beads onto it and
then tighten the knot. Take another cord and
embellish the rim of the pan changknot, then
hide all four cord ends inside the body of the
knot.

10

Fold a cotton cord and a plastic cord
and tie them into a ru yi knot. Hide
the ends of the plastic cord in the body of
the knot. String three beads onto one of the
cotton cord ends, then attach it to the plastic
ru yiknot. Bind the other end of the cotton
cord with thread below its ru yi knot but
above the first bead.
