First, make a piece of leather cord.
With the leather side facing out, pass
the cord through a passage at the top of the
porcelain medallion, then tie a round brocade
knot with six outer loops (3). Extend the mid-
dle outer loop on each side of the round bro-
cade knot into a cloverleaf knot (1, 2). Leave
enough cord for the necklace loop, then tie
both cord ends together. Finally, insert a bead
in the center of the round brocade knot.

47

Fold a cord through the loop of a
pendant and tie a double connection
knot (1) followed by a pan changknot (8).
Extend the outer corner loop on each side of
the pan changknot into a cloverleaf knot (2,
3), but do not tighten the pan changknot yet.
Tie a gold cord along the right side of the
original cord in the pan changknot. On com-
pleting the top right corner loop, turn the
gold cord end back and tie a cloverleaf knot
with two outer loops (4), the first side loop
being on the top right side. On completing
the bottom right corner loop of the pan chang
knot, turn the cord end back and tie a clover-
leaf knot with two outer loops (5), the first
side loop being on the bottom right side.
Repeat the steps on the left (6, 8), making
sure both sides of the knot formation are
identical. Then tighten the pan changknot.
Hide the gold cord end inside the bottom
part of the knot body. Then tie the two origi-
nal cord ends into a double connection knot
(9). Leave enough cord for the necklace loop
and tie the ends into a button knot. Finally,
sew jade (or other) beads into the two outer
loops of cloverleaf knots 2 and 3.

48

Gold cords are not normally used to
tie the body of a knot since they snap
quite easily. This knot formation is an excep-
tion. Using soft cords to supplement a gold
cord prevents it from being damaged by ex-
cessive friction. First, fold a gold cord and tie
a stone chime knot (9). Extend the third loops
on the top left and top right sides into knots
similar to a ru yiknot by replacing the clover-
leaf knot situated on top of the ru yiknot with
a round brocade knot (2–4; 6–8). Do not tight-
en the stone chime knot yet. Weave another
soft cord into the knot body for support, then
only tighten the knot. After completing the
stone chime knot, hook up the green gem-
stone pendant with the soft cord. Pull the
soft cord and the gold cord together upward
through the knot body. Tie the right ends of
both cords into several interspaced double
connection knots to form the necklace loop.
Do the same for the left cord ends. Then tie
the two ends of the necklace loop into a but-
ton knot. Finally, insert beads into the outer
loops of the ru yiknots, as shown.

49

Fold a cord through a chain of jade
rings and tie a double connection
knot (1) followed by a winged pan chang
knot (4). Extend the second side loops on
the top left and right of the winged pan
changknot into a cloverleaf knot (2, 3).
Then tie a san caiknot (7), making the
bottom corner loops on each side fold
around the chain of jade rings. Extend the
first side loops on the bottom left and right
into a ru yiknot (5, 6). Tie another double
connection knot (8). Leave enough cord
for the necklace loop, then tie the two
ends into a final double connection knot.
