This decorative knot formation is
made with two cords. Tie the first
cord into a pan changknot (1), then embellish
its rim with the second cord. After completing
the rim embellishment, tie the second cord
into a winged pan changknot (2) and use the
first cord to embellish its rim. Hide all four
cord ends inside the body of the knot.

74

Fold a cord and tie a pan chang
knot (7). On completing the first
loop at top right, turn back the cord
ends and tie a round brocade knot (3),
hooking it up with the neighboring side
loop (1). Then extend the outermost
loop into a cloverleaf knot (2). On com-
pleting the first side loop at bottom
right, extend it into a round brocade
knot (6), hooking it up with the neigh-
boring side loop (4).Then extend the
outermost loop into a cloverleaf knot
(5). Make sure the right and left sides
are identical. After completing the pan
changknot, sew the cord ends inside
the knot body.

75

This knot formation comprises a series
of interlinked cloverleaf knots tied in
the sequence (1–13), as indicated above. How-
ever, the tying techniques of cloverleaf knots
4, 9 and 12 are the same as that of the last
cloverleaf knot within the ru yi knot.

The design of this formation, “Two Dragons Playing With a Dragon Ball,” is based on
a stone carving on the wall of an ancient Chinese tomb. It is tied with cords of two dif-
ferent colors. First, fold a cord and tie a round brocade knot (1) to form the dragon ball. Then,
using the tying technique of the dragon knot (see Chinese Knotting, page 68), tie the two cords
separately into two dragon heads (2, 3) lying on either side of the round brocade knot. Finally,
using the tying technique with four cord ends (see page 13 above), tie a long series of knots
(4) very similar to a double connection knot to form the intertwined bodies of the dragons.

tightly yet. Weave the right end of the dark
colored cord beneath pan changknot 5 into
round brocade knot 28, as shown. On com-
pleting the middle outer loop on the right,
pull the cord end through the body of pan
changknot 14 and tie knots 15–18 using the
same technique as for knots 6–9. Do exactly
the same thing with the dark colored cord’s
left cord end. After the dark colored cord
ends are finished, tighten and adjust round
brocade knot 28. Continue downward, tying a
structure similar to knots 1– 9.
