To make the knot formation on the front of the jacket (see diagram
above), fold a cord and tie the right half of a san caiknot (2). Tie
the adjoining side loops at the right corner into a cloverleaf knot with two
outer loops (1). Using another cord, repeat the steps for the left side (3, 4),
making sure the knots are identical. The two halves when placed on either
side of the zipper opening form a ram’s head.
To make two identical knot formations for the shoulders (see diagram at
right), start knotting from the bottom. Fold a cord and tie a cloverleaf knot
(1) followed by a round brocade knot (2). Separate the cord ends and tie
each into a cloverleaf knot (3, 4). Bring the cord ends together and tie an-
other cloverleaf knot (5) using the tying technique of the cloverleaf knot
situated in the middle of a ru yiknot. Then tie a crossed hui ling knot (18).
Extend the side loops on all four sides of the hui ling knot into a double
coin knot (6, 11; 12, 17). Extend the right corner loop into a round brocade
knot with six outer loops (10). Extend every second outer loop of the round
brocade knot into a cloverleaf knot (7–9). Repeat the last two steps on the
other side (13–16), making sure the left and right sides of the formation
are identical. After completing crossed hui ling knot 18, tie a pan chang
knot (19), a ru yiknot (20) and, finally, a knot similar to the ram’s head struc-
ture (21–23) on the back of the jacket (see above).
To make the knot formation on the back (see diagram at right), first fold
a cord and tie a san caiknot (3). Tie the adjoining side loops at the top left
corner into a cloverleaf knot with two outer loops (1). Repeat on the other
side (2), making sure both sides are identical. After completing the san cai
knot, pull the cord ends through the san caiknot body and tie a round
brocade knot with fourteen outer loops (12). Extend the second outer loop
on the right side into a cloverleaf knot (4). Extend the fourth outer loop in-
to a round brocade knot (6), then extend its outermost loop into a ru yiknot
(5). Extend the sixth outer loop of round brocade knot 12 into a cloverleaf
knot (7). Repeat the steps on the left (8–11), making sure both sides are
identical. After completing round brocade knot 12, tie a big pan changknot
(13), a small pan changknot (14) and a cloverleaf knot (15).
Sew all four knot formations onto the jacket. Using the cord ends from
the formations on the front and back of the jacket, trim the edges, moving
towards both shoulders, as shown, then hide all the cord ends below the
knot bodies on the shoulders.
