This belt is made from a single cord. Fold the cord into
unequal lengths depending on the position of the hang-
ing knot formation. Here, the left cord end is longer than the
right one. Using the left cord end, start the tying process from
the bottom part of the hanging knot formation. Tie a cloverleaf
knot (1) followed by a round brocade knot with six outer loops
(4). Extend the middle outer loop on each side of the round
brocade knot into a cloverleaf knot (2, 3). Then tie a pan chang
knot (5) followed by a creeper knot (6). (Note that this knot
formation hangs from the outer loop of creeper knot 6, which
forms part of the belt.) Still using the longer left cord, tie anoth-
er creeper knot (8) and extend its outer loop into a cloverleaf
knot (7). Tie another creeper knot (11), extend its outer loop
into a round brocade knot (10) and then extend the top outer
loop into a cloverleaf knot (9). Then tie a long series of creeper
knots and extend all their outer creeper loop into cloverleaf
knots (13, 12). Apply the same tying technique to the shorter
right cord end (15–20). Form a button knot (14) on the longer
end of the belt and a loop on the shorter end.

Use two different colored cords to make this
eye-catching belt ornament. First, tie one cord
into a multiple winged pan changknot (1), then use
the second cord to embellish its rim. Bring all four cord
ends together and tie a double connection knot (2).
Separate the first cord ends and use them to tie a long
pan changknot (5) (see Chinese Knotting, page 74). On
completing the bottom corner loops on each side of
the long pan changknot, extend them into a cloverleaf
knot with two outer loops (3, 4). Then, using the second
cord ends, embellish the rim of the long pan chang
knot, as shown at left, and extend the top corner loop
on each side into a round brocade knot (6, 7). Bring all
four cords together again and tie a button tassel (8)
at a short distance below the long pan changknot.
The tassel cords can also be of two colors.

The two hanging knot formations on the ends
of this belt are identical. To make each forma-
tion, fold a cord and, leaving a small loop at the top,
tie a button knot (1), a pan changknot (2), a double
connection knot (3), a longevity knot (4) (see Chinese
Knotting, page 64) and a double connection knot (5).
Pull both cord ends through a porcelain bead (or any
similar item) and tie a button tassel (6) below. Cords
of similar colors can be used to make the tassel cords.
To make the belt, string four cords of the same color
through the loop above button knot 1 on the first knot
formation, fold them and sew all eight cord ends onto
button knot 1 of the second identical knot formation.
