This elaborate belt decoration is made
up of three separate knot formations
hooked up as one. Its outer ring comprises
six round brocade knots and six double coin
knots; the inner ring, a cloverleaf knot with
multiple outer loops; and the ring below, six
cloverleaf knots. Starting from the top, fold
a cord and tie two double connection knots
(1, 2) followed by a round brocade knot (3)
made with both cord ends. Lengthen the
bottom left and right outer loops of round
brocade knot 3 and tie a cloverleaf knot (4)
in the inner ring. Then, separate the right
cord end and tie it into a round brocade knot
(6) at a suitable distance. Tie the outer loop
of round brocade knot 6 with the adjoining
outer loop of round brocade knot 3 into a
double coin knot (5). Then tie a cloverleaf
knot (7) just below round brocade knot 6
using the tying technique of the cloverleaf
knot in the middle of the ru yiknot. Complete
knots (8–16) following the same procedure,
making sure the outer loops of all six clover-
leaf knots in the inner ring are hooked up.
Using the connecting cords of the inner
ring cloverleaf knots, tie the central cloverleaf
knot with multiple outer loops (17). To com-
plete the inner ring, tie the last cloverleaf knot
(18) and hook up its outer loop with that of
the adjoining cloverleaf knot 16. To complete
the outer ring, tie the last round brocade knot
(21). Tie its left and right outer loops with
those of adjoining round brocade knots 9
and 15 into double coin knots (19, 20).
To make the last knot formation, at the
bottom, first tie a double connection knot
(22), then separate the right cord end to tie
three cloverleaf knots (23–25) with two, three
and two outer loops respectively. Do the same
thing with the left cord end (26–28). Use the
connecting cords of these six cloverleaf knots
to tie a cloverleaf knot with multiple outer
loops (29), followed by a double connection
knot (30) just below it. Finally, tie a button
tassel (31). Tie the remaining cord ends into
cloverleaf knots (32–37) with two or three
outer loops, turn back the ends and bind with
fine thread.

The ancient Chinese liked to hang
a toothpick container on their belts
for use as well as decoration. The design
of this unique belt hanging, made up of
eleven round brocade knots, is based on
that concept. First, fold a cord through a
toothpick container and tie a round bro-
cade knot (1) followed by another round
brocade knot (10). Extend the four outer
loops of round brocade knot 10 into a
round brocade knot (3,5;7,9),then ex-
tend the outermost loop of each into a
cloverleaf knot (2, 4; 6, 8). After completing
round brocade knot 10, tie another round
brocade knot (11). Finally, tie a button tas-
sel (12). Fold back the cord ends and bind
them with fine thread.
