To make this hanging ornament
for a sandalwood (or other) fan,
first pull a cord through the hole at the
bottom of the fan, then fold it and tie a ru yi
knot (1), a winged pan changknot (2) and
a ru yiknot (3). Finally, tie a button tassel
(4). Fasten the cord ends of the tassel with
silver threads, as shown above.

Fold a cord through the loop at the top of this Filipino wind chime made from
seashells and tie a ru yiknot (1) followed by a cloverleaf knot (2). Separate the right
cord and tie a cloverleaf knot (3), hooking its middle outer loop to the adjacent loop of clover-
leaf knot 2. Then tie a ru yiknot (4) followed by another cloverleaf knot (5). Make sure cloverleaf
knot 5 is hooked up with the outer loop of cloverleaf knot 3. Tie another cloverleaf knot (6)
whose outer loop is hooked up with cloverleaf knot 5. Repeat the steps on the left side (7–10),
making sure both sides are identical. Bring together the cord ends of this group of cloverleaf
knots and tie a cloverleaf knot with multiple outer loops (11). Then tie both cord ends into a
cloverleaf knot (12) and hook them up with the outer loops of cloverleaf knots 6 and 10. Final-
ly, tie an inverted ru yiknot (13) followed by a double connection knot (14). Leave enough cord
at the end for hanging the wind chime. Sew a cultured pearl (or other bead) in the center of
the knot formation.

114

For this fan decoration, fold a cord through the small hole at the bottom of the fan
and tie a double connection knot (1), a button knot (2) and a hui lingknot (3). Embel-
lish the rim of the hui lingknot with another cord (see page 17 above). Then tie a small hui ling
knot (4) using the second cord. Hide both cord ends inside the knot body. Using the two original
cord ends, embellish the rim of the second hui lingknot. Finally, tie a button tassel (5).

115

Use plastic cords that are heat and
water resistant to tie this knot for-
mation for the handlebars of a bicycle. Fold
a cord and tie a button knot (1), a pan chang
knot (2), a ru yiknot (3) and a button tassel (4).
Take two other cords and weave them sepa-
rately through the button knot and the but-
ton tassel to give two colors. Embellish the
rim of the pan changknot with another cord,
and weave both cord ends into the cloverleaf
knot on the top part of the ru yiknot to make
it a two-color cloverleaf knot. Fold and sew
two other cords onto the button tassel to add
more color (see page 112 above).
