This hanging ornament, compris-
ing four separate knot formations,
denotes prosperity and longevity. To make
the top knot formation, fold a cord and tie a
double connection knot (1), a pan changknot
(2) and a button knot (5). Embellish the rim of
the pan changknot with another cord, at the
same time extending the corner loop on each
side into a round brocade knot (3, 4). Weave
the cord ends into the button knot and sew
them inside the knot body.
The tying technique for the knot formation
on the left and right is exactly the same. Fold
a cord and tie a big (1), medium (2) and small
(3) pan changknot followed by a button knot
(9). Fold another cord and string it with a
multicolored (or other) porcelain bead, leaving
a small loop at the top. Tie a double connec-
tion knot (4), then embellish the rims of the
three pan changknots with the cord. Using
the same cord, extend the corner loop on
each side of big pan changknot 1 into a round
brocade knot (5, 6). Extend the corner loop
on each side of medium pan changknot 2
into a cloverleaf knot (7, 8). After completing
the rim embellishment on small pan chang
knot 3, tie both cord ends into a button knot
(9), then sew them inside the knot body. Sew
a bundle of cords onto the button knot to
form tassel cords.
The name of the bottom knot formation is
“Happiness in the Four Seasons.” Fold a cord,
string it with a porcelain (or other) bead and
tie a ru yiknot (1) followed by a pan chang
knot (4). Extend the corner loops on each side
of the pan changknot into a ru yiknot (2, 3).
Do not tighten the pan changknot yet. Weave
a gold cord alongside the original cord of the
pan changknot, then only tighten the knot.
Sew both ends of the gold cord and one end
of the original cord inside the knot body. Tie
the other one into a ru yiknot (5), then sew
it also inside the knot body. Sew a porcelain
bead with a diagonal weave tassel (6) onto
the bottom of the knot formation. After com-
pleting all four knot formations, sew them
onto the hanging pendant, as shown at left.
