The cord material for this knot formation (see photograph
page 15) is called “snake’s abdomen.” Since the cord looks
like two conjoined cords, the resulting knot formation is very unusual.
Fold a snake abdomen cord and tie a double connection knot (1) fol-
lowed by a ling huaknot (2). Fold another cord and embellish the rim
of the ling huaknot. Extend the corner loop on each side of the ling
huaknot into a round brocade knot with six outer loops (6, 10). Extend
every other outer loop into a cloverleaf knot (3–5; 7–9). Bring the four
cord ends together at the bottom of the ling huaknot and tie them
into a button knot (11). Hide three cord ends inside the knot body and
pull the remaining one through the piece of jade (or other ornamental
object). Make a separate button tassel (12) and tie it to the cord end
at the bottom of the jade piece.

To make this dangling ornament (see photograph page
14), tie two cords into a double happiness knot (1) (see
Chinese Knotting, page 66), but do not directly hook up the first hori-
zontal stroke. Instead, hook it up with a double coin knot. After com-
pleting the double happiness knot, tie the two cord ends on the right
side into a double connection knot (2) followed by two button ring
knots (3, 4). Sew a diagonal weave tassel (5) on the bottom. Repeat
the steps for the left side (6–9). Fold another cord and tie a stone
chime knot (10). Hook up the bottom corner loops on each side with
double happiness knot 1. After completing the stone chime knot, pull
both cord ends through the body of the knot and out the top and tie
a button knot (11), a button ring knot (12), another button knot (13),
and (not shown) a plafond knot (see Chinese Knotting, page 56) and
double connection knot for hanging.
