A knotted phoenix (see photograph page 20) makes a
delightful decoration on clothes, accessories and soft
furnishings. To make the phoenix knot, see Chinese Knotting, page

  1. After completing the phoenix knot, embellish it with another
cord of a similar color, as shown above, to enhance its beauty.

This necklace is best made in colors that complement
those of the porcelain vase included in the knot formation
(see photograph page 22). To make the formation, fold a cord, tie a
pan changknot (1), then hide the ends of the cord inside the body
of the knot. Take another cord, leave enough length for the necklace
loop, then tie a double connection knot (2) followed by a ru yiknot
(3). Separate the two cord ends and use them to embellish the top left
and right rims of the pan changknot. When the cord ends reach the
corner loops on each side of the pan changknot, extend them into a
ru yiknot (4, 5), then continue to embellish the bottom left and right
rims of the pan changknot. Bring the cords ends together and tie
them into a double connection knot (6) just below the pan chang
knot. Finally, pull both cord ends through the porcelain vase and tie
a button tassel (7).
