CREEPER KNOT 59

Creeper Knot

This knot comprises a creeper outer loop and two side loops. Normally, this knot is
made by tying the cord around a stiff cylindrical rod or ring-like structure which
forms the axis, hence the name creeper knot. If it is not wound round an axis, the
creeper loop is easily pulled out and the whole knot loosened. Tying a side loop on
the creeper loop tends to stabilize it.

Tying

When tying a long series of creeper knots, ensure that the two outer loops are on
different sides of the knot so that the creeper knots are not wound too tightly around
the axis. If both outer loops are placed to one side of the knot, the cord cannot wind
around the axis properly and will leave gaps of fixed sizes, giving rise to a completely
different type of creeper arrangement.

Tip

  • When making a belt with a series of creeper knots, it is best to start from the mid-
section of the cord and work towards both ends in order to avoid confusion arising
from working with a very long cord.
